Snow

The snow clings to his breath like a memory, shivering cold against his lips as it falls. It's a bitter snow, like ashes on his tongue. His boots crunch on the frozen ground as he walks toward the lone figure standing against the scraggly trees.

"Kara."

"Lee." There's a tightness to her voice that he imagines matches his own. Things were said and done, and they both know they can't go back now. "I'm surprised you were able to leave Pegasus."

"It's amazing what you can do when you trust the people you leave behind." He tosses the package to her, noting the bleached whiteness of her skin and the bright red marks where her metal rings band her skin. "Here."

He grabs another pack behind him and tosses it to her. Her hand doesn't quite respond in the cold and she barely manages to hang on to the strap. She lowers it to the ground and stares at it before looking back at him. "Thank you."

He can see how much the words hurt her, and he wonders if that means she still cares, or that she doesn't. "Next time you want something, ask my father. I've got nothing for you."

Her eyes hold his for an instant too long. "Did you ever?"
