He sat down in the last row beside the door and turned his chair so he could see a little bit into the hall and see who was coming and going. This morning had been pure hell. All the teachers called upon him constantly, expecting Willow to know the answers. Which, he was sure, she would have if her mind had been where it belonged.
His heart quickened as he saw himself coming down the hall. He sighed with relief as Willow sat down beside him.
"Will?" he asked softly. She nodded in response. Awkwardly he reached out and patted her hand. "I'm SO glad to see you, me, whatever."
The bell rang and they looked around helplessly. No speaking was a strict rule in study hall. Mr. Corrigan, the teacher unfortunate enough to be at the front of the room today, looked cranky enough to enforce it.
'Note?' Willow mouthed to Xander, who nodded, red hair bobbing. Willow pulled out a piece of paper and a pen and scribbled madly on the page before placing it in front of Xander on the desk they shared.
I'm sorry about this! I think it's my fault.
Don't worry about it. We'll fix it.
How're you holding up?
Well, it's kinda weird, but I suppose it could be worse.
Are you behaving yourself?
Yes! Well, mostly. I kinda freaked and checked out a couple of parts when it first happened.
Xander!
Look Will, I was disoriented. I didn't know. I'm sorry.
I suppose it's okay. Are we going to survive this?
Of course. I mean, I don't want to spend the rest of my life in Willow, so we'll just have to find a way to fix it.
No. I mean us. Being best friends. This is really awkward.
Will, we've been best friends for too long to let this get in the way. If I had to switch with someone, I'm glad it was you. I know we can trust each other through this. We're still gonna be best friends at the end when we go back. I won't let it turn out any other way.
Willow smiled at Xander as he handed her back the pen and squeezed his hand. Then she began writing again.
Thanks. I feel the same way. I just needed to know that you were in sync.
Are all your teachers gonna bug me all day for answers?
Probably. But I aced your history quiz this morning.
Woohoo! Way to go Will! Too bad this didn't happen during finals.
Xander!
Do you think my Mom knows anything?
No. She was kinda upset it took me so long to shower and stuff, but I don't think she suspects anything.
You SHOWERED?!
I didn't see anything! I swear! I looked straight ahead the whole time. I certainly didn't wash anything below your neck.
Great, so when I get back, I'll be all gamey.
Well, hopefully we can fix this today and you can shower again tonight.
Right. So, you showered. You dressed me pretty good. Where'd you find that shirt? I've been looking for it.
It was in your laundry room. Please don't be mad, but I kinda saw you in your underwear too.
You saw me in my underwear!
Relax, I've seen you in various stages of undress for years. I thought it was best I told you the truth. I don't want to keep any secrets during this.
But you haven't seen me in my underwear since we were eight!
True. Well, you said you checked some parts out. Which parts?
Willow pulled out a new piece of paper so Xander could write an answer.
I've been bonding with your breasts.
Xander! She paused and rolled her eyes before continuing. Are you going to behave from here on out?
Look who's talking! You have me parading around in my underwear!
Well, at least I didn't see you naked. I'm trying to behave myself. This is just so awkward. And how are we going to tell Oz and Cordelia?
Xander shrugged in response just as the bell rang, startling them both. Time had flown while they'd written and thought.
Xander shoved both pieces of paper into Willow's binder tucked it under his arm. "Library?" he asked.
Willow nodded. "Of course. Have you talked to Giles already?"
"Yeah. Buffy and I talked to him right after it happened. He was going to work on it."
"Then let's go," Willow said, straightening Xander's shirt on her new frame before grabbing her books and heading for the door.
Oz waited outside study hall for Willow to emerge. He was hoping she could come to one of the music rooms and listen to the new song he was working on. She often gave him insightful opinions about his music.
He straightened a little as he spotted Willow and Xander speaking as they gathered up their stuff. He was about to call out to her when Devon stepped in front of him, blocking them from his view.
"Oz!" Devon drawled. "You skipped practice. Is it because of a certain junior you've been dating?"
"Hey Dev, I really don't have-"
"When are you going to move up to the big leagues, man? You're a senior. You should be exploiting that opportunity."
Oz looked around Devon and watched as Willow and Xander rushed out the door, toward the library. They were moving really fast. He noticed a piece of paper fly out of Willow's binder and flutter to the floor lazily.. He pushed lightly on Devon and tried to move past him.
"I'm not interested in exploitation. I'm interested in Willow," he emerged on the other side of Dev and sighed as Willow and Xander disappeared from sight. He crouched down and retrieved her fallen paper. < At least at that speed I can be sure they headed for the library… >
"Oz man, I was just trying to offer some friendly advice." Devon opened his arms in a sweeping gesture of helpfulness. "There's practice at Ron's tonight. Don't miss it." He ordered as he continued down the hall.
Oz straightened and glanced at the paper. His eyes widened as he scanned the words written there. < Breasts?! Underwear?! NAKED?! Tell Oz and Cordelia? This CANNOT be good. > He stood, immobile for long moments as the implications of the words on the page echoed around in his brain. Xander was getting intimate with Willow's breasts. They had some kind of thing going on. He felt a blind, jealous, rage build up inside him and suddenly was surprised to find he had no other goals in life at that moment besides making Xander hurt.
He tucked the paper under his arm and began the trek to the place with all the answers. The library. He found his steps getting louder and faster as the desire to kick Xander's ass increased. He barely paused when he threw open the doors and looked for the object of his rage. Xander was sitting at the table, but he stood as Oz entered. < And he was going to help me with what kind of flower Willow likes.. > Oz clenched his hand into a fist and headed straight for Xander.
"Oz! I'm glad you're here! We've got something to explain-" Willow stopped in confusion as Oz approached her with a definite purpose. She opened her mouth in alarm as he cocked back his fist and shrieked in shock as it connected to her cheek.
"Um, okay, OW!" she was able to manage before sinking to the floor.
"Willow!" Xander exclaimed as he ran around the table to his body, now slumped on the floor. "What is with you, man?" he demanded as Oz stood there.
Oz looked from Willow standing over Xander to Xander's face and then back again. < Did she just call him 'Willow'? >
Giles emerged from his office and clapped the book he was reading shut as he surveyed the scene in front of him. "Willow! Are you all right?" In a couple of strides, he was across the floor and aiding Xander in helping Willow to a chair.
"Okay," Oz began in an uncertain voice. "Now two of you have called him 'Willow'. What exactly do you guys mean by that?"
Xander left Willow's side and stalked over to Oz. "We mean 'Willow' as in 'Willow your girlfriend', and YOU just clocked her!"
"I'll get an ice pack," Giles muttered, heading back into his office.
"But-" Oz began to protest to the red-head in front of him. "You're - "
Xander grabbed Oz by the front of his shirt and pushed against him until he was backed up against the wall. "Willow and I somehow switched bodies this morning. We're trying to fix it, but right now, I'm Xander and that-" he pointed to the form of Xander in the chair. "Is Willow!"
Oz held his hands up in a gesture of surrender. "Look, man, I'm sorry. I just read this and-"
Xander yanked the paper from his hands and recognized it immediately. "Way to jump to the wrong conclusion, Oz."
"Ow," Willow moaned lightly as she began to awaken.
Oz crossed the room in an instant. He approached Willow in Xander's body cautiously, reminding himself that it was really his girlfriend in there. He squatted beside her chair. "Oh, baby, I'm SO sorry."
"Oz?" she asked, disoriented. "Why'd you hit me?"
"Um, I…It …. I thought you were sleeping with Xander," he blurted out suddenly.
Willow blushed as her mouth opened and closed. She couldn't think of anything at all to say. Giles, emerging from his office, promptly dropped his ice pack and blushed as well.
"Why?"
Xander waved the piece of paper in front of her. "Because of this."
She glanced at it quickly and then covered her face with her hands. Giles recovered enough to retrieve the ice pack from the floor and hand it to her. She pressed it to her cheek and smiled her thanks to him. "We can talk about it later. I'm guessing Xander filled you in on what happened?"
"Y-Y-Yes," Oz stammered, sitting beside her. "So how far have you gotten in fixing it?"
"Giles?" she asked, waiting for Oz's question to be answered.
"N-Not very far, actually. I can't find any reference to making a wish come true or a spell to do this…."
Xander spoke first. "So, we're stuck like this?"
"Forever?" Willow added fearfully.
"No, no, of course not," Giles rushed to assure them. "If there was a way to do it, there has to be a way to undo it. We just have to find it."
Willow sighed. "Why don't I send some feelers out to Ms. Calendar's magic newsgroup on the web and see if they know anything?"
"Good idea," Giles murmured, "I still have a few more sources to check myself." He headed back into his office.
Willow moved to the computer terminal at the end of the table and flipped it on. She rubbed her face where it ached and reapplied the ice pack. Waiting for the computer to be ready, she turned to Oz. "Next time you think you've come across something suspicious, can we please talk about it before you resort to fisticuffs?"
"Willow, I'm SO sorry. I promise it'll never happen again." Oz approached her and wrapped his arms around her neck from behind, trying to show her how sorry he was. "It's just-when I read that note, I was so jealous. I couldn't see or think, I just wanted him away from you." She lowered her ice pack and smiled as Oz spoke, trying to convey that it was, eventually, going to be okay.
"Hey, hey, hey," Xander called to them. "That's my body there! Keep it clean!"
Willow sighed as the computer beeped that it was ready and prepared to type. Then she froze as she felt something press against her cheek. And smiled widely as she realized it was Oz's lips.
"HEY!" Xander exploded across the room and rushed over to where Willow was sitting. Oz saw him coming out of the corner of his eye and took off before Xander could reach him.
Cordelia pushed open the library doors, quietly, and took in the scene before her in silence. Willow was chasing Oz around the library table and then through the stacks repeatedly yelling, "Stay away from my body!!!" She raised her eyebrows. She never expected to see those two fighting. Especially over physical contact, no less.
She spotted Xander sitting at the computer terminal, typing furiously and ignoring the chaos around him. She smiled. < He must be playing that stupid game again. That means I can surprise him… > She approached him slowly, a smile spreading across her lips.
Xander caught sight of Cordelia and stopped pursuing Oz, intending on calling out a warning to her. He stood paralyzed as he watched his girlfriend grab Willow's confused face with both hands before planting a solid kiss on her lips.
Both Xander and Oz abandoned their chase and sprinted for the pair at the computer. Willow spent a moment in sheer bafflement as she felt Cordelia's lips meet hers, then she reacted violently. She screamed and jumped backwards, knocking over the chair at the computer terminal in her haste. She backed up against a book cart and shrieked again as she jumped forward in surprise. Oz grabbed Willow by the waist, holding her steady as she furiously began wiping at her lips. "Don't EVER do that again!" Willow hissed at Cordy.
Cordelia put her hands on her hips, "What exactly is your problem Xander Harris? You've never minded kissing me before! I am getting really sick of this hot and cold thing you've had going lately…" Xander approached her and put her hands on Cordy's shoulders.
"Cordelia, this is gonna sound weird, but I want you to keep an open mind, okay?"
Cordelia looked at Willow's hands on her shoulders and again at the petite hacker in front of her. "Uh huh."
"Cordy, I'm Xander. Somehow, Willow and I switched bodies this morning. So you actually just kissed…" Xander let his voice trail off as he examined the look of horror on Cordy's face.
"Oh my God! I'm gonna yak!" Cordelia managed to screech before bolting from the library as fast as her platform shoes would carry her. All was silent in the library for long seconds. The remaining three occupants looked at each other and at the swinging library doors, trying to decide what to do next. Oz finally came to a decision on the next course of action. "Somebody should destroy that note before SHE sees it," he noted.
